Lala Lala Releases Mesmerizing New Single/Video, “Utopia Planet” New Album, I Want The Door To Open, Out This Friday on Hardly Art

WED, OCT 6, 2021

Lala Lala, the project of Chicago-based musician Lillie West, will release her new album, I Want The Door To Open, this Friday on Hardly Art. Today, she presents a mesmerizing new video, for new single and album closer, “Utopia Planet.” Amorphous synth elevates West’s surging voice and later, saxophone by Sen Morimoto blooms as a recording of West’s grandmother unfurls across the track. It is the fitting end to the inner labyrinth that West maps on I Want The Door To Open, a musical quest undertaken with the knowledge that the titular door may never open; but it is through falling in love with the quest itself that one may find the closest thing to total freedom, total possibility, and total acceptance available to us. The video, created by Meggie van Zwieten, is in step with the digital aesthetic presented on the album cover.

“‘Utopia Planet’ was born because my friend Kara Jackson and I challenged each other to write a song about Utopia,” says West. “I tried to imagine a great expanse, abundance, an open door. It’s an invitation to surrender. I used a recording of my grandmother to take you further into another world.”

Following 2018’s acclaimed The Lamb, West wanted to make something sonically bigger and thematically more outward-looking than anything she’d done before; a record that would be more like a poem or a puzzle box, with sonic and lyrical clues that would allow the listener to, as the title says, open the door to the greater meaning of those struggles. The resulting I Want The Door To Open is a bold exploration of persona and presence from an artist questioning how to be herself fully in a world where the self is in constant negotiation.

To celebrate the release of I Want The Door To Open, West will play a string of shows, including a release day performance at Chicago’s Thalia Hall this Friday and Los Angeles and New York dates later this month. Following a European run in early 2022, West will return stateside and continue to tour.

What people are saying about La Luz:
“La Luz’s new single “In The Country” is an extremely cool piece of spectral, shimmering folk-rock. It’s full of eerie, layered harmonies and reverb-drenched surf-guitar notes, and it absolutely nails its out-of-time pop-psychedelia sound.” [“In The Country”]  Stereogum

“La Luz create a vibrant and balmy atmosphere on “In The Country”, with warm guitars and Cleveland’s tender vocal. The fuzzy and chirping electronic additions do indeed sound something like cicadas in the nearby trees – or perhaps something further flung like intercepted alien broadcasts. Either way, La Luz are settling back, pushing aside any obligations, and taking it all in, purely enjoying being “In The Country” – and with this song they invite us to join them in repose and enjoy the summer air.” [“In The Country”] Beats Per Minute

“Known for reverb-heavy guitar licks, a tasteful deployment of dynamics and singular harmonies––a range of emotive “oohs” and “ahhs” that vacillate between haunting melancholy and revelrous mirth––the band (Shana Cleveland-guitar, Lena Simon-bass, Alice Sandahl-keys) has crafted a lush, earthy and undeniably psychedelic collection of songs for La Luz. And the record is also the band’s most personal.” [“Watching Cartoons”] WJCT

“Lala Lala’s songs needle and probe: they’re emotional, sure, but they’re also exacting, and that’s why they can feel so visceral.” - The FADER

“Each of the singles in the lead-up have been an absolute thrill… This is some of the best music of the year.” - Paste

“I Want The Door To Open feels like a celebration of community, camaraderie, and world-building, awash in glossy bombast and existential urgency.” - Chicago Reader

Hear La Luz’s new track, “Lazy Eyes and Dune” ahead of their new self-titled album, out next Friday

THU, OCT 14, 2021

Early this summer LA’s La Luz announced a much-anticipated fourth album, with the self-titled La Luz set for October 22nd on long-term label Hardly Art. Recorded at Linear Labs Studio in Los Angeles with the help of the eclectic producer Adrian Younge, La Luz fearlessly launch themselves into a new realm of emotional intimacy with a collection of songs steeped in the mysteries of the natural world and the magic of human chemistry that has found manifestation in the musical ESP between guitarist and songwriter Shana Cleveland, bassist Lena Simon, and keyboardist Alice Sandal.

Following the critically-acclaimed trio of singles “In The Country, “Watching Cartoons,” “The Pines” and “Oh Blue” comes “Lazy Eyes And Dune.” La Luz international headlining dates in support of their self-titled record for the US, UK, and EU have been announced.
