Starting today, you can stream all 13 tracks from The Julie Ruin’s second full-length album Hit Reset via NPR Music’s First Listen. Writer Ann Powers says of Hit Reset that “[Kathleen Hanna] triumphs at every decibel,” adding, “The sound Hanna has developed with [keyboardist Kenny] Mellman, bassist Kathi Wilcox, guitarist Sarah Landreau and drummer Carmine Cavelli is deceptively loose, invoking girl groups, glam, hardcore punk and the party jams of Hanna’s own protégés, like her labelmates in Tacocat, while always keeping humor and truth-telling at the center.”
Seattle band Tacocat will be capping off their already-incredible 2016 with another nationwide tour this September/October–including a headlining show at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg–with even more dates TBA. Head here for a full list of upcoming shows, including next month’s West Coast run with The Regrettes.
The band’s also heralding the arrival of summer weather with a cover version of The Sunray’s 1965 gem “I Live For The Sun,” which you can stream here.
Ever-busy, widely-beloved Seattle rock group Chastity Belt will embark to Australia this fall for a run of shows in the homeland of their onetime-tourmate Courtney Barnett. In addition, they’ve shared new August tour dates along the West Coast, and will headline a sold-out show at Brooklyn’s Market Hotel tonight featuring labelmates Colleen Green and IAN SWEET. Their current East Coast/Midwest tour includes an appearance at this month’s Sled Island music festival in Calgary.
See the tour page for a full list of current and upcoming Chastity Belt performances.
Hardly Art is pleased to welcome Brooklyn trio IAN SWEET (formerly IAN) to our roster. Shapeshifter– the band’s first-ever full length album – will be released on CD, LP, digital and cassette formats on Friday, September 9th. Earlier today, The FADER premiered IAN SWEET’s dexterous, buoyant new single “Slime Time Live.” The song’s title references an early aughts Nickelodeon show, though its subject matter is weighty (the emotional quicksand of heartbreak and anxiety), and given striking dimension by frontwoman Jilian Medford’s guileless gem of a voice. Listen here or via the embed below.
IAN SWEET perform tonight in Cambridge at Middle East Downstairs with labelmates Colleen Green and Chastity Belt, and tomorrow night in Brooklyn at Market Hotel with the same pairing. See the tour page for a full list of upcoming shows.
In addition to releasing Shapeshifter this fall, IAN SWEET’s acclaimed 2014 debut EP has been remastered and re-released. This six song self-titled release is available today from Hardly Art on digital/streaming and cassette formats. Pre-orders for Shapeshifter are available here, orders for IAN SWEET are available here.
This morning, The AV Club shared Seattle band Tacocat’s live cover of Katy Perry’s smash-hit “Roar” as part of their ongoing Undercover series. Tacocat is currently concluding a marathon European tour and will perform on the mainstage of the Sasquatch! Music Festival this coming Sunday.

Hardly Art is incredibly proud to announce its latest signing: The Julie Ruin. Set for release on LP, CD, digital, and cassette formats on Friday, July 8th, Hit Reset – which finds the band operating at the peak of their considerable talents – is The Julie Ruin’s first full-length since 2013’s Run Fast and the release of the biographical documentary The Punk Singer (which charts Kathleen Hanna’s career from the founding of Bikini Kill through to this latest iteration of The Julie Ruin). Leadoff single “I Decide” premiered this morning via Pitchfork, and was heard last night on Henry Rollins’ KCRW radio program. It’s yours to stream here or via the embed below. The band has also shared a lyric video for the song, starring Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield as she listens to the song for the first time at SXSW, which you can watch below.
Of Hit Reset’s subject matter, Kathleen Hanna says, “I was way more honest lyrically on this record because we’d been on the road together and I felt more confident taking risks in front of my bandmates,” adding “I’ve written about my personal bouts with illness, abuse, sexism and how hard it is for me to walk away from people even when they are toxic Tasmanian Devils before, but not in this way.”
Hit Reset is now available in our shop for preorder on all formats, with the first press of LPs on white vinyl.
